where did you meet them? (the francos) does Dave teach too? from Anonymous

Well, James was my creative writing professor for the past two quarters at UCLA. Right now, it’s Spring quarter at UCLA, and it’s my last quarter before I graduate. I really miss the class and am having a sort of withdrawal from not being able to take his class anymore. He’s not teaching now, but I hear he will be teaching again next fall. Dave does not teach, but I met him at a party that I was invited to. They are both down-to-earth and friendly. It’s a common misconception that James is always high.

Farewell! (at Coachella Recharge Bar)
Coachella was awesome. I have heard some critics and some friends say that this year’s lineup was not all that good, and I can understand them when I consider the lineup for years past. Sure, not that many well-known artists performed this year, but there were some special “jewels” this year. There were a lot of throw-back and nostalgia-inducing performances by The Postal Service, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Stone Roses. Although I did not see the Stone Roses myself, I have to say that these artists and their performance this weekend embody the trend for music these days. I notice that most artists now are thinking backwards in terms of musical style; they are being influenced and taking styles from older artists. Let me elaborate on the music that I’m talking about; the selfless musicians who are not heavily influenced by commercial success. Most of this year’s lineup consisted of these musicians. It was great to see Sigur Rós, Local Natives, Vampire Weekend, Allen Stone, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Stars, Of Monsters and Men, Portugal. The Man, and The Lumineers. It was a great experience, and I would definitely like to go again. I am looking forward to seeing next year’s lineup. View Larger

Class Field Trip (at Disneyland)
For our final assignment, Franco wanted us to create something unique.  This didn’t really phase me because every class is a different, fun, and an interesting experience.  We wrote a story that combined both Disney characters/themes with Holden Caufield (Catcher in the Rye) personalities/traits/characteristics.  I combined Donald Duck and Holden Caufield, and I titled my story “Quack.”  Which plays off well with Holden’s resentment towards “phony” things.  I will post my story later… Anyway, we took these stories, and we read them aloud in class (we were recorded both on video and audio, as always).  We’re taking this and combining it with footage that we filmed at Disneyland, riding our favorite rides.  We’re juxtaposing our stories with our experience at Disneyland to create an interesting dynamic that you normally wouldn’t see or imagine.  We’re also taking something prolific and innocent (Disney characters and themes) and fusing them with concepts that are pensive and serious.
